What is the Seattle Erotic Art Festival?
Held over three days in the center of Seattle, the Erotic Art Festival was originally launched in 2003 by the (then) Sex Positive Community Center. Originally attended by around 1,000 visitors, the event has become much bigger and now offers thousands of visitors an experience like no other.
The festival’s Mission Statement sums the event up best:
“Seattle Erotic Art Festival encourages the creation, enjoyment, and purchase of erotic art–sparking conversations to ignite personal and cultural evolutions.”
Over the years, the event has evolved to become what it is today:
- In 2004, the festival added erotic films to their art offerings, and introduced the Festival Store.
- In 2005 the Festival Store cemented itself as a permanent feature and the year’s films were curated by Kathryn Albright/Sex on Screen.
- In 2008, the festival moved to the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall hosting an impressive one-night gala.
- In 2009, the festival included 300 works of exhibition art and premiered the Literary Art Showcase and the first Sunday Open House.
- In 2010, the first-ever stage show production was included in the schedule which featured the talents of the Cabinet of Curiosities.
- In 2011 and 2012, the festival included an Erotic Short Film Exhibition in an on-site movie theater plus extended the reach of the Literary Art Exhibition with popular poetry.
- In 2013, the festival moved (temporarily) to the more intimate venue of the ShowBox SODO and sold almost 30% of the exhibition art.
- In 2014, the event returned to the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall.
- In 2015, the festival included acts such as the performance artists Gender Tender.
- In 2016, Rm. 1618 and Aaaahz! were introduced to add more interactive installations at the Festival. The festival also featured ‘Revolution in Restraint’, an art festival within the Festival.
Each day, the main gallery hosts an exhibition of art and daily performances which can include acrobatic displays and literary readings to aerial and bondage installations. The festival store allows guests to purchase souvenirs from their visit which includes unique merchandise, limited edition prints and other memorabilia from the festival including some of the original art itself.
Each evening, the space is transformed into a party zone and the crowd transforms from simply being an audience member to become the central focus of attention.
It is an energetic carnival of all things erotic and has become one of the must-attend events on the kink calendar for anyone who enjoys intelligent and engaging art. The festival is a sex-positive space and attracts people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures who have a shared love of being titillated and entertained.
Previous years have seen the venue divided into several different areas, including:
- Art Buyers Lounge
- Literary Lair
- Aerial Stage
- Main Stage
- Festival Store
Highlights from the archives of recent years, include interactive performances on the bondage and aerial stage, guided tours with the festival director, sex advice from acclaimed BDSM Mistresses, drop-in educational workshops and ambient performances. You can even watch art being created live on site as well as take part in the process.
In addition, 2019 will see the return of Aaaahz!. A sensual ‘exploratorium’ created by one of the festival’s creative directors, Andy Cargile (of Sensation City), which offers visitors an interactive experience. This can include sampling aphrodisiac treats, having your clothes torn from your body or getting a full body-paint job among many other heady delights.
The 2019 event is expected to be just as colorful and eclectic as previous years with a similar mix of live music, interactive installations, readings, classes, lectures and performances. In addition the main gallery will also have brand new pieces on display plus audio erotic experiences. You can also look forward to the evening’s party which, once again, will feature the best international DJs.
Daytime guests at the Seattle Erotic Art Festival must be aged 18 and over in order to gain entry to the events and ID must be provided. Holders of an evening pass must be aged 21 and over
